UG is the term often used by Chomsky for those aspects of the human brain which cause language to be the way it is (i.e. are Universal Grammar in the sense used here) but here for discussion it is used for those aspects which are furthermore specific to language (thus UG, as Chomsky uses it, is just an abbreviation for Universal Grammar, but UG* as used here is a subset of Universal Grammar). universal grammar (UG) (noun): a theory in linguistics usually credited to Noam Chomsky that suggests that the ability to learn grammar is built into the human brain from birth regardless of language In the 1960s, linguists became interested in a new theory about grammar, or the laws of language. Universal Grammar (UG) in linguistics, is the theory of the genetic component of the language faculty, usually credited to Noam Chomsky. The basic postulate of UG is that a certain set of structural rules are innate to humans, independent of sensory experience.

Plato’s Problem was expressed generally by Bertrand Russell: “How comes it that human beings, whose contacts with the world are brief and personal and limited, are nevertheless able to know as much as they do know?” Approaching UG from Below Chomsky 2007 Hao Wang Approaching UG from Below Noam Chomsky The problem that has virtually defined the serious study of language since its ancient origins, if only implicitly, is to identify the specific nature of this distinctive human possession. Noam Chomsky claims that all languages have a common underlying system and all human beings inherit a universal set of principles that provide SLLs to acquire L2 as they acquire their native language with the help of an acquisition device that is UG. Chomsky developed the LAD in the 1950s, and since then, has moved on to a greater theory called universal grammar (or UG) to account for the rapid language development in humans. The talents displayed by fish and birds rest on specific biological structures whose intricate detail is attributable to genetic endowment. Below I will describe how and explain why UG came into existence, and point out each phase in which UG has undergone internal changes as generative theory has undergone revision and reformulation. 2.1. Don’t believe the rumours.

As toddlers, humans start to pick up on the language use of those around them, organizing it according to the rules of UG. If UG consists of highly specific but accidental properties (with no particular relation to the communicative functions of languages), then there is indeed no reason to think that alien languages would conform to UG. By contrast, Noam Chomsky’s recent comments bring human languages and alien languages closer together.
